According to a new Response Marketing Group study of TV advertising, 19 percent of television commercials now contain a World Wide Web address. Overall, 37 percent of commercials feature either a toll-free number or an Internet address, or both.

The Internet economy now totals $200 billion worldwide and, by 2002, will total upwards of $950 billion, according to a report released this week by International Data. "This is larger than the current economy of Greece or Portugal," noted John Gantz, IDC senior vice president.

Nearly 600 Million Computers-in-Use in Year 2000 - November 3, 1998
According to the Internet Industry Almanac there will be over 579 million computers-in-use by year-end 2000--up from 360 million computers-in-use at year-end 1997. The U.S. is projected to have over 164 million computers-in-use or 28.3% of the total in year 2000. The top 16 countries shown in the following table account for over 70% of the worldwide computers-in-use in year 2000. These numbers include all computers, from PCs to supercomputers, used in business, educational institutions and homes.

Over 95% of the computers-in-use are PCs. Worldwide yearly shipments of computers will surpass 90M units in 1998, but only 50% plus will add to the installed base as nearly half will be replacing existing computers. About 5% of the 30M plus PCs sold in the U.S. in 1998 will be sold via the Internet, which will grow to 10% of nearly 40M in 2000. At year-end 1997 there were 3.6 computers for each Internet user.

At year-end 1997 there were 11 countries with over one million Internet users, which will grow to 38 countries in year 2000. In 1997 there were also 11 countries where over 10% of the population were Internet users. By year 2000 there will be 25 countries where over 10% of the population will be Internet users.

The average U.S. online computer user spends 6 hours a week surfing the Internet, according to a new poll conducted by Louis Harris and Associates. That figure does not include the time spent sending and receiving e-mail, which is the most popular online activity.
